College of Science Career Night

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

5:00-8:00pm in the Johnson Center's Dewberry Hall

What is the Career Night?

The 5th annual COS Career Night will be held on February 1st from 5:00-8:00pm in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall.  This event brings alumni, COS friends, and representatives from local employers to the Fairfax campus to talk with undergraduate students about their careers, the career options that are available to students with science and math degrees, and the pathways to those careers.  This event is designed to educate students on the realities of the workplace and help them better prepare for their entrance into the workforce.

What is the Career Night Not?
This event is NOT a Career Fair, so no one will be interviewing students for jobs or collecting resumes at the Career Night.  However, this event is a wonderful way to prepare for the University Career Fair, which will take place on February 22 and 23 (see http://careers.gmu.edu/jobfair/ for more details).

Who Should Attend?
The Career Night has something for all COS undergraduate students:

• If you are a junior or a senior you are probably thinking about what you plan to do after graduating from Mason.  At the Career Night you will have the opportunity to talk to panelists about their careers and career options open to you with your degree.

• If you are a freshman or sophomore this is an opportunity to learn about the many career options available to students with science and math degrees.  By attending the Career Night you might discover what you want to do with the rest of your life.

• If you are a transfer student you may be confused about what you need to do to complete your degree at Mason and what you can do with that degree once you are finished.  By attending the Career Night you will have a chance to meet other students and professionals in the field from whom you can learn about programs of study and career options.

What's Going to Happen at the Career Night?

Students should arrive at Dewberry Hall around 5:00pm to check in. At 5:30pm Career Services will hold a 30-minute session on networking where you will learn basic networking skills that you can practice later in the evening.  The career panels will begin at 6:00pm.  Each of the three panels will consist of representatives from local companies and government agencies who will talk about their own careers and what you can do with a science or math degree.  Students will have ample time to ask the panelists career-oriented questions during the hour-long career panel.  Pizza will be provided for everyone at 7:00pm and students and panelists will have an opportunity to mix with each other and ask additional questions in a mock networking session.  The evening will end at 8:00pm.

What Should I Wear?

The most appropriate clothing for this event would be business casual. Ripped jeans and a t-shirt are inappropriate for the event, but you are not interviewing for a job, either, so no need to wear your best business suit. Wear clothing you feel comfortable in and which looks at least somewhat professional.

We look forward to seeing you there!
