The Center for Earth Observing and Space Research  (CEOSR) at George Mason University focuses on research that enhances our understanding of the earth and the space that envelops it. CEOSR scientists perform basic and applied research using satellite platforms and sensors, earth systems, information technologies, and innovative computational algorithms.

Bringing the Big Picture down to Earth

The Center’s cutting-edge research uses satellite technology, including data acquisition and processing, information extraction and analysis, and numerical modeling for a variety of applications such as natural hazards and risk assessment, atmospheric pollution, hurricane tracking, and geospatial intelligence. CEOSR's goal  is to develop pioneering scientific methodologies that advance science through the creative combination of earth observing, space research, geoinformatics, and numerical modeling.

Research through Strategic Partnerships

As the largest research center at Mason, CEOSR has more than 60 affiliated scientists and more than 60 graduate students. The Center’s strong ties with government agencies include partnerships with NASA, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and National Science Foundation (NSF) on these and other research projects :

  • Joint Interdisciplinary Earth Science Information Center (NASA)
  • Remote Sensing, Computational Physics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Associated Scientific Fields (NRL)
  • Mobilization of NASA EOS Data and Information through Web Services and Knowledge Management Technologies (NASA)
  • Automated Image-Based Linear Feature Extraction and Updating (NGA)
  • Measurements and Advanced Modeling of Dispersion in the Urban Environment (NSF)
