Dr. Seo has researched the role of the land surface process in the global climate system. This includes the improvement of sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction systems via prescribing realistic land-atmosphere interaction. To obtain a better land surface product, land data assimilation and physically-based time filtering have been conducted by using microwave remote sensing retrievals. These studies are applicable to the forecast of extreme events in regional and global climates.
Dr. Seo has been involved in the project titled "Validating Coupled Land-Atmosphere Processes in UFS" coordinated with colleagues in the National Weather Service and National Center for Atmospheric Research to develop and implement the next-generation weather forecast model, the Unified Forecast System (UFS). This project investigates the validation of the performance of the next generation forecast model, especially focusing on the impact of the replaced land surface model (Noah-MP) on the coupled model system in terms of land-atmosphere interactions.
