About
Dr. Richard Peet has more than 30 years experience in cross-functional scientific, legal and business leadership roles spanning research operations, intellectual property strategy and business development in the life sciences industry. He is an entrepreneurial-minded scientist, inventor, lawyer and business leader with material involvement in multiple successful investor exits.
Dr. Peet invented and patented a process for the manufacture of healthy new prebiotic-containing food ingredient, whole chicory fiber, and sold the patented technology to Philips Morris, Inc. in 2020. In 2014 Dr. Peet was the co-founder of Teewinot Life Sciences Corporation and co-inventor of a patent protected biocatalytic process for the manufacture of pharmaceutically pure cannabinoids. Dr. Peet invented new processes for the manufacture of cannabinoids and co-founded Formulate Bioscience, Inc. to develop cannabinoid-based therapies (CBTx) using these molecules.
Dr. Peet was a partner at the Am Law 100 law firm Foley & Lardner, LLP where he represented pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on patent litigation and procurement matters. He was Chair of the firm’s Chemistry and Biotechnology Practice Group and International Business Team. Dr. Peet received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in the field of molecular biology and was a research scientist at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Sandoz Corporation in Palo Alto, USA.
Dr. Peet has authorship on numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications as well as articles and a book on intellectual property law issues. He is an affiliate professor in the George Mason University School of Systems Biology. Dr. Peet is named as an inventor on more than 20 patents.
Current Research
I am currently engaged in two areas of research. The first area of research is focused on development of methods for the production of cannabinoids and their potential use in the treatment of diseases. I invented processes for the biosynthetic and biocatalytic production of pharmaceutically pure cannabinoids. I co-founded the company Formulate Bioscience, Inc. to commercialize these processes and cannabinoid-based therapies (CBTx). The second areas of research is the microbiome and the health benefits of prebiotic fiber. I invented processes for the manufacture of whole chicory fiber, a minimally processed food ingredient containing about 65%, on a dry weight basis, of the prebiotic fiber oligofructose.
