Are the cicadas coming back to the DMV? Brood X stragglers could emerge this year
WASHINGTON (7News) — This time last year, cicadas were emerging from the ground around the DC area as temperatures were warming up ahead of the summer season.
The big, clumsy -- harmless to humans without the means to bite or sting and soon -- came out in droves last summer, creating a scene out of a horror movie for some neighborhoods.

Even though the 17-year cicadas are not expected again in masses until 2038, a few stragglers are expected this year. The upcoming heat wave -- three days of temperatures in the 90s starting Friday -- could bring those late bloomers out.

StormWatch7 Meteorologist Alex Liggitt shared this video of the cicadas emerging in his backyard this time last year.
He said while doing yardwork over the weekend, he noticed some cicadas right under the surface.

There could be some stragglers from the main brood that emerge this year, once the soil temperatures reaches 64 degrees.
In 2021, the cicadas emerged in May and were gone by the Fourth of July.
The spent weeks singing or chirping, mate, breed and then die.
