About
Esteban D. Araya is a Term Assistant Professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at George Mason University. After finishing his PhD at New Mexico Tech, Dr. Araya was a postdoctoral Jansky Fellow of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at the University of New Mexico. Before joining GMU, Dr. Araya was a Professor of Physics at Western Illinois University (WIU) for over 15 years, where he taught a wide range of courses, from Introduction to Astronomy to the capstone Graduate Seminar of the Master’s Program.
Dr. Araya’s research focuses on the interstellar medium and star formation at cm and mm wavelengths, using molecular spectroscopy and radio continuum observations. Dr. Araya is a coauthor of over 50 peer-reviewed publications in astrophysics, and he has mentored over 50 graduate, undergraduate, and high school students in research projects based on observations conducted with radio telescopes such as the NRAO’s Very Large Array.
Teaching Focus
Dr. Araya teaches university physics courses at the GMU Physics and Astronomy Department. He has more than 17 years of experience teaching physics and astronomy courses at the college level.
