About
Dr. Lee studies midlatitude weather and climate dynamics, with a focus on extratropical cyclones, storm tracks, and their associated surface impacts. His work is motivated by the idea that synoptic-scale weather systems provide a physical bridge between day-to-day weather variability and longer-term climate variability and change. Using reanalysis datasets, climate model simulations, and cyclone tracking methods, he examines how these weather systems vary across regions and seasons, how they are represented in climate models, and how they contribute to hydroclimate variability and extremes such as heavy precipitation and drought.
Current Research
Dr. Lee’s current research focuses on evaluating the skill and sources of error in subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction of midlatitude hydroclimate. He develops process-based diagnostics that connect large-scale circulation variability with extratropical cyclone activity and cyclone-related precipitation. Using UFS reforecasts, reanalysis datasets, and cyclone tracking methods, he examines how predictable large-scale environments translate into cyclone behavior and associated precipitation, and how process-level errors contribute to regional precipitation forecast biases and extremes.
