Current Research
Research interests include ancient DNA and Steller’s sea cows (Hydrodamalis gigas). We work to extract DNA from bone of these extinct animals. We are also using a similar technique to extract DNA from narwhal (Monodon monoceros) teeth (the tusk in males).
I work with research semester students, OSCAR students and occasionally a high school student. My focus has been mainly on getting undergraduates research experience.
Teaching Focus
Before her retirement, Dr. Crerar coordinated the Writing Intensive course for Biology majors called BIOL 308: Foundations of Ecology and Evolution in both the lecture and the laboratory. She also taught BIOL 177: Ecological Applications, which was designed for the Environmental Engineering majors mainly. Dr. Crerar offered Marine Mammal Biology and Conservation for undergraduate and graduate students in Environmental Science and Biology. Beginning in the Fall of 2019, Drs. Olmo and Crerar began teaching a freshman readiness course called BIOL 101.
Dr. Crerar spent 10 years teaching at JEB Stuart High School in Fairfax County, Virginia as well as 4 years teaching at Marymount College in both Biology and Computer Science.
