Dylan Nguyen, student in the Computational and Data Sciences program, was one of 61 student scholar athletes honored recently with the Peter N. Stearns Provost Scholar Athlete Award. Dylan, an honors student and member of Mason’s men’s swimming and diving team, excels in both his studies and his sports pursuits.

"I continue to just marvel at how our student-athletes achieve excellence in the classroom while balancing the rigors of athletic competition," said Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Brad Edwards in a press release shared by Mason's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics

“I occasionally heard about this award from alumni, but I didn’t know the specifics or requirements to be a recipient,” said Dylan. “I don’t strive for a particular award because I never want to put the extra stress on myself. I mostly just focus on learning as much as I can in the classroom and trying my best to make a positive impact on the world and the George Mason community.

“Computational and Data Sciences at Mason is not your typical major,” he continued. “It is so multidisciplinary and provides a wide range of opportunities for everyone. Even though I am only a second-year student, I have already applied data science to different disciplines such as biology, physics, and environmental science.  The curriculum at Mason has helped me succeed immensely in past internships and current research positions”

Dylan has also been on the Dean’s List and Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.  He a Data Scientist and Research Assistant at the Center for Mind and Culture (CMAC), Boston University, working on the Modeling Religious Change (MRC) project with two other George Mason students.  Also, for the second consecutive summer, he will intern for the United States Department of Defense and Department of Navy as a Laboratory Research Intern at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division.

Congratulations, Dylan!

The Peter N. Stearns Provost Scholar Athlete award is named for Dr. Peter N. Sterns, University Professor and Provost Emeritus, Honors College.  Now in its 14th year, the Stearns award recognizes student-athletes who have earned at least 38 credit hours at Mason and have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better.
