Dean's Student Excellence Awards open for applications

The Dean of the College of Science is opening, for applications, the annual award search to recognize excellence by students in the College of Science for the 2022-2023 academic year.  There are a variety of areas where you might identify excellence in a particular student.  For example, you could nominate someone for excellence in graduate teaching; in publications, conference papers, or research; in speaking or lecture competitions; in community outreach for the Sciences, or for excellence in AJEDI engagement.  We are open to reviewing excellence in the five categories below that really contribute to the reputation and mission of the College of Science. Please be sure to cite excellence which has taken place SPECIFICALLY WITHIN THE 2022-2023 academic year.

1.  Dean's Graduate Student Award: Excellence in Research
This award will recognize a College of Science graduate student. The major criterion is demonstrated scholarly and research excellence. Each graduate department may nominate a single candidate.

2.  Dean's Graduate Student Award: Excellence in Teaching
This award will recognize a College of Science graduate student. The major criterion is demonstrated excellence in supporting teaching in the college. Each department may nominate a single candidate.

3.  Dean's Undergraduate Student Award: Excellence in Academics or Research
This award will recognize a College of Science undergraduate student. The major criterion is demonstrated academic performance and/or research excellence. Each department may nominate a single candidate.

4.  Dean's Student Award: Excellence in Service
This award recognizes a College of Science student (graduate OR undergraduate) who has demonstrated (through leadership, innovation, initiative, and perseverance) a commitment to creating positive change through service to the Sciences (in our college, campus, or wider community). Each department may nominate a single candidate.

5.  Dean’s Student Award: Excellence in AJEDI Engagement (access, justice, equity, diversity, & inclusion)

This award will recognize a College of Science student (graduate OR undergraduate) who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing AJEDI values and Inclusive Excellence through their steadfast engagement in AJEDI / Inclusive Excellence related projects, initiatives, outreach efforts, service-learning activities, peer mentoring, leadership, professional development, knowledge sharing / dissemination, etc. Each department may nominate a single candidate.

We ask that each department coordinate their efforts and nominations be approved by the chair/director before being submitted to the Dean's Office.  (Please limit departmental nominations to your best candidate in each of the five award categories above.)

In order to nominate a student, you should submit a one-page (double spaced) description of the activity/activities in which the student has demonstrated "excellence" that occurred during the 2022-2023 academic year.  PLEASE BE SURE TO CLEARLY IDENTIFY WHICH OF THE FOUR AWARDS EACH SUBMISSION IS FOR.  In addition to the one-page description, please submit the student's resume/CV.  These two items should be EMAILED to Cody Edwards (cedward7@gmu.edu) by the department chair or his/her designate no later than noon on March 24.  In addition to a certificate, there will be a monetary award included.  Please help us honor our amazing students who give so much of themselves to the College of Science.
