Title: The Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration (GPFLR) – A guerrilla type convention? 

The seminar will discuss the evolution and work of the partnership, and the involvement of different partner organizations. The partnership represents a striking example of new forms of global environmental governance – working through partnerships of state, market, and/or civil society actors.

Speakers: Lars Laestadius (former WRI) and Jerilyn Levi (former US Forest Service), who have both been actively involved in the GPFLR.

Lars Laestadius (Laestadius Consulting) is an independent consultant after more than 17 years in the World Resources Institute’s (WRI) forests program. While at WRI, he led the work of Global Forest Watch Russia to provide IKEA and other companies with maps of intact forest landscapes to guide wood procurement, developing a method that has since been applied worldwide. Lars also led the creation of the Forest Legality Alliance, a business-NGO partnership to reduce the cost of keeping illegal wood out of supply chains, and an initiative to map global opportunities for restoration of forests and landscapes. Before coming to WRI, he led the efforts of the COST Secretariat in the European Commission to coordinate nationally funded research on forests and forest products in Europe and did research in forestry operations. Lars has a forestry degree from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and a PhD in wood supply systems from Virginia Tech in the USA.

Jerilyn Levi had a long career with the US Forest Service, beginning as a firefighter in California in 1974 and concluding as the Assistant Director for Policy for International Programs in Washington DC in 2012. In her last position, working with agency experts and non-governmental partners, she and her staff provided science policy advice for multilateral negotiations and US Government positions on a wide range of conservation issues such as sustainable forest management and forest products trade; climate change adaptation and mitigation; and endangered and invasive species management. She studied Fire Science/Management at the University of Washington and Forestry at Oregon State University.  Her involvement with large-scale landscape restoration dates from early in her career and experiences with wildfires and prescribed burning in fire-adapted systems in the Western US and Alaska.
