AOES has been given permission to offer a new Doctoral program in Geology and Earth Science. Students can enter the program starting Fall 2025, according to an announcement by the Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

The announcement comes on the heels of record enrollment for graduate students working with AOES geologists. It joins the MS program in Earth Systems Science, which AOES jointly administers with the Geography and Geoinformation Science Department.

Geology is the study of the present-day and ancient Earth from the perspective of the rock record. Earth science includes geology, but also encompasses the study of present-day Earth processes, including the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere and their interactions with the biosphere. Geologists and Earth scientists must be educated and trained in a wide, cross-disciplinary collection of science topics. Graduates of the program will be prepared to carry out fundamental research as well as research and development of natural resources and be able to teach at colleges and universities.

AOES faculty and staff are working to update the department web site to include information about the new PhD.
