George Mason Department of Mathematical Sciences Leadership Update

During the 2026–27 academic year, Mathematical Sciences Professor Maria Emelianenko will be on approved leave from her role as department chair to serve as a Program Director at the U.S. National Science Foundation in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Her appointment is expected to run from August 24, 2026 through August 23, 2027.

Emelianenko will administer applied math program portfolio and take part in strategic planning and collaboration with other NSF programs. She will contribute her expertise in applied and computational mathematics, especially in mathematical modeling at the intersection between math, science and engineering, to help advance NSF's mission and promote the progress of science.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for Maria and a significant recognition of her expertise and leadership,” shared College of Science Dean, Cody W. Edwards. “NSF program directors play an important role in shaping and advancing the nation’s research enterprise, and I am delighted that Maria will have the opportunity to contribute at this level. Her service also strengthens the connections between George Mason University and one of the nation’s most important federal science agencies.”

While at NSF, Maria will remain a George Mason faculty member and will continue to be connected to the university through selected research and faculty-related responsibilities.

Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences, Matt Holzer will serve as Acting Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences during Maria’s leave. 

“As one of our leading researchers, an outstanding teacher and mentor, and an experienced administrator in his role as Graduate Admissions Director, Matt brings an exceptional combination of skills to the chair position,” explained Emelianenko. "Matt is well prepared to handle the complexities of the job, and I know the department will be in very good hands under his leadership."

Holzer's research interests include differential equations, existence and stability of traveling waves, dynamics on complex networks, and pattern formation. Before coming to George Mason, he completed his Ph.D. at Boston University and was a postdoc at the University of Minnesota. 

“I am excited—and a bit daunted—to take on the role of chair for the upcoming year. Maria has done an amazing job over the past several years, and I hope to build on those accomplishments in her absence. I look forward to supporting the department and the college, collaborating with our faculty, staff, and students, and maintaining the momentum that Maria has helped to establish,” Holzer added.
