Math Professor Receives National Award

Padmanabhan Seshaiyer, George Mason University's Mathematics Professor has been awarded the 2023 Council on Undergraduate Research’s (CUR) "Mathematical, Computing and Statistical Sciences Advanced Career Mentor Award." This annual award honors one faculty mentor nationwide for their success in mentoring undergraduate students in Mathematics/CS research. He dedicates this award to the over 150 students that he has had the privilege to mentor in undergraduate research over the last two decades.

It has been an incredible honor to mentor so many dedicated students over the years on using mathematics and computing to address societal challenges. This has also helped me to become a better mentor by working with students on “what they want to know” rather than just mentoring them on “what we want them to know.”

Criteria for this award include evidence of professional development of students mentored such as presenting at conferences and co-authoring publications as well as evidence of impact and success of these students after they finish their undergraduate studies.

Congratulations, Dr. Seshaiyer!
