Preparing Future Generations to Address Global Pandemics with Innovative Mathematical Thinking

Professor Padmanabhan Seshaiyer recently published an article on the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) News site explaining how he worked with students during the pandemic to "utilize innovative approaches that integrate knowledge from various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics discipline" while seeking to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all." A sample project builds upon the analysis of Comfort Ohajunwa, a current freshman in college who worked with him on a mentored high school research project in the summers of 2020 and 2021 to develop a new mathematical model that tracks the impact of social behavior during COVID-19. Ohajunwa’s efforts have already led to four peer-reviewed journal publications and several national and international conference presentations. Read more here: SIAM News article
