Professor Valeriu Soltan Retires After 25 Years of Distinguished Service at Mason
This spring, Professor Valeriu Soltan retired from George Mason University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences after 25 years of remarkable contributions in teaching, research, and academic leadership.
A globally respected expert in convex and discrete geometry, graph theory, combinatorics, and computational geometry, Professor Soltan has authored over 150 scientific works, including three monographs and more than 145 peer-reviewed articles in leading mathematics journals. His work is especially recognized for advancing classical linear algebra, axiomatic convexity theory, and computational geometry, as well as making impactful contributions in optimization methods.
During his tenure at Mason, Professor Soltan was known not only for his scholarly achievements but also for his dedication to teaching and mentorship. He taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, supervised PhD dissertations, and guided many students toward academic and professional success. His commitment to education extended to developing and teaching a specialized geometry sequence for elementary school teachers, leaving a lasting impact on mathematics education in the region.
Professor Soltan also played a vital role in service and leadership at Mason, serving on departmental committees such as the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the College of Science Executive Council. He was a generous mentor to colleagues and an engaged academic citizen, organizing conferences, serving on editorial boards, and supporting the growth of the department and the university.
His international reputation is further reflected in visiting appointments and invited lectures across Europe and North America. In recognition of his lifetime achievements and scientific leadership, the Senate of the State University of Moldova awarded Professor Soltan the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on June 30, 2023. This prestigious honor acknowledges his essential contributions to the development of classical linear algebra, convexity theory, and computational geometry, as well as his role as an ambassador of mathematics in Romanian and Moldovan academic communities. His tireless efforts to promote mathematics and its societal importance stand as a model for young scholars.
Professor Soltan’s legacy at George Mason University is one of rigorous scholarship, dedicated mentorship, and collaborative leadership. As he transitions to retirement, he plans to continue his research while maintaining his ties to Mason as Professor Emeritus.
