Students Recognized for Winning Posters

Congratulations to four of our senior students who submitted winning posters to the 2022 College of Science Undergraduate Research Colloquium Competition."    

Gowri Prathap

Gowri Prathap presented “A System to Study Anti-American Misinformation and Disinformation on Social Media.” Mentored by CDS faculty Dr. Hamdi Kavak, Ms. Prathap highlighted significant challenges of our century with societal, political, and economic implications.

Clare Lewis

Clare Lewis’s work was motivated by understanding “Stock Price Movement Causation via Natural Language Processing on Reddit.” This work has important implications for understanding the behavioral habits of the public and their impact on the stock market. Her mentor was Dr. Ron Mahabir.

Alileah Alnozaily and Thomas Hutchinson Castro

Alileah Alnozaily and Thomas Hutchinson Castro, biology majors with CDS minors, through a joint CDS-Biology initiative, worked on a project that involved the development of a new course that introduces computational tools to early career Biology students. Their work, “Computing for Biological Scientists: 21st Century Skills for 21st Century Biology Majors,” helps equip biology students with the tools and computational skills necessary to address problems and concepts in a more rigorous and testable manner. Their mentors were Dr. Ron Mahabir and Dr. Sharmin Abdullah.

We would also like to recognize poster submissions by the following students: Davis Kajuna, Dhruv Gandhi, Ekrem Kaya, Andre Monroe, Jannat Raja, Natalie Barerra, Raveen Omar, Liam Whitenack, Aanish Nadeem, Zach Richardson, and Robina Bokhari. Last but not least, special thanks to Dr. Olga Gkountouna for her role mentoring some of the aforementioned students.

The 11th annual Colloquium, sponsored by College of Science and STEM Accelerator, was a virtual event held on April 27.  The purpose of the yearly Colloquium is to showcase the variety of undergraduate research projects. All undergraduate students engaged in research in any COS unit were invited to participate and to submit posters in any of four categories.
