Two George Mason Mathematical Sciences students receive 2024 Trjitzinsky Award

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has chosen several undergraduate awardees from across the United States through the Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky Memorial Fund, which is made possible by a bequest from the estate of Waldemar J., Barbara G., and Juliette Trjitzinsky. The Mathematical Sciences department has matched each award for a total of $3,000 each.
Mark Dubynskyi, senior, has been working on quantum algorithms at the Mason Experimental Geometry Lab as well as at Argonne National Laboratory. Mark plans to pursue a PhD and continue studying quantum technology.
Bhim Tiwari, senior, intends to pursue a graduate degree to establish a career in research within the domains of mathematics and data science. He is deeply committed to exploring intricate mathematical challenges and engaging in research that offers practical solutions to real-world issues.
About the Award
The Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky Memorial Fund was established by his family and stipulates that the income from their bequest be used to create a scholarship to assist students in mathematics obtain their degrees.
Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky was born in Russia in 1901 and received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1926. He taught at a number of institutions before taking a position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he remained for the rest of his professional life. He showed particular concern for students of mathematics and in some cases made personal efforts to ensure that financial considerations would not hinder their studies. Trjitzinsky was the author of about 60 mathematics papers, primarily on quasi-analytic functions and partial differential equations. A member of the AMS for 46 years, he died in 1973.
