About
I was born in Moscow, USSR, in 1955. I got my PhD in theoretical physics in 1984 from the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow. In 1989-1994, I was a Humboldt Fellow and later a research staff member at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Germany. In 1994-1996, I was a research associate at the Geophysical Lab of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. From 2010 to 2019, I worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. In 2019, I retired and assumed a position as a professor at GMU.
Current Research
I am mostly, albeit not entirely, a computational theorist specializing in superconducting, magnetic, optical, and other properties of real materials. For instance, in 2018, I received the Bardeen Prize in Theory of Superconductivity "for influential first-principles theoretical approaches to a broad class of multi-orbital superconductors".
Teaching Focus
I am trying to flip the classroom as much as possible. I see little value in repeating to my students what they can read in their textbooks. Rather, I focus on solving real problems and on thinking outside the box.
