Education
Carol O’Neal received a Bachelors degree in Biological Chemistry from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 1987. She then pursued a Masters of Forensic Science degree at the George Washington University while working in several clinical toxicology laboratories specializing the therapeutic drug monitoring and drugs of abuse testing. After completing her M.F.S. degree in 1993, she then received a Ph.D. in Forensic Toxicology from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998 for research investigating acetylcodeine, a contaminant of heroin. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Human Toxicology at the University of Utah. Her work there involved research on drug testing of alternative matrices including saliva, hair and sweat.
About
Since 1999 she has been employed as a Forensic Toxicologist Supervisor with the Northern Virginia Laboratory of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. DFS performs toxicology testing for cases submitted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, DUI and DUI(Drugs) cases and suspected Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault cases. She has testified over 500 times in the past 17 years. Dr. O’Neal is a Fellow with the American Board of Forensic Toxicology and member of The Society of Forensic Toxicologists and American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. O’Neal began teaching the Forensic Toxicology course in the George Mason University Forensic Science Graduate Program in 2009. Dr. O’Neal enjoys educating graduate students about Forensic Toxicology because it is a subject many students may not be familiar with. It can be a challenging discipline especially given the emergence of many different types of synthetic drugs that are now becoming available for abuse.
