Title: A Neurobiology of Female Sexual Desire
Summary: The primary complaint related to sexual behavior among women is a loss of sexual interest/desire. Two drugs are FDA approved to treat sexual desire disorder in women, though neither drug demonstrates any clinical benefit. The failure of these drugs stems from the belief that sexual desire can not be modeled in animals and thus the development of these drugs did not emerge from preclinical studies. We have developed, we believe, a valid Syrian hamster model of sexual desire. My presentation will be an overview of the results of our studies demonstrating the value of this model of female sexual dysfunction, including underlying neural mechanisms of sexual interest and desire.
