Title: Does the Landau equation blow-up?
Abstract: Hilbert's sixth problem is to connect microscopic particle dynamics, which follow Newton's laws, to macroscopic equations like the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. A crucial tool in this program sits at the intermediate scale: the Landau equation. It connects spatial dynamics on large scales with the velocities of individual particles undergoing collisions. The fundamental question of whether solutions exist for all time or blow-up is completely open. During this talk, I will overview the evidence for both, allowing you to make your own prediction about this. In the end, will you root for Team Global Boundedness or Team Blow-up?
Time: Friday, February 20, 3:30pm – 4:30pm
Place: Exploratory Hall, room 4106 or Zoom
