Mathematics Colloquium: The Erdős-Szekeres problem
Nov 10, 2023, 3:30 - 4:30 PM
Speaker: Cosmin Pohoata, Emory University
Title: The Erdős-Szekeres problem
Abstract : For every natural number n, if we start with sufficiently many points in R^d in general position there will always exist n points in convex position. The problem of determining quantitative bounds for this statement is known as the Erdős-Szekeres problem, and is one of the oldest problems in Ramsey theory (sometimes also called the “Happy Ending Problem”). We will discuss some of its history, along with some recent developments in the plane and in higher dimensions.
Time: Friday, November 10, 3:30pm – 4:20pm
Place: Exploratory Hall, room 4106
