Title: Three Topic Talk: Optimization History, Flat Maps, and Complex Roots
Abstract: In the talk, I will cover three somewhat disjoint, but I hope interesting, topics. First, I will briefly describe how I became involved in developing algorithms for solving optimization problems. Then, I will go into some mathematical detail about generating flat maps of the Earth using stress minimization. And, lastly, if there is time, I will discuss how to find the distribution of the complex roots of random polynomials and other similar random sums.
