Title: Species Distribution and Habitat Suitability Modeling (SDM/HSM) to Investigate Ecology, Movement, and Distribution of Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) for Potential Vernal Pool Creation
Thesis Director: Dr. Thomas Wood
Committee: Dr. Brian Gratwicke, Dr. Esther Peters
ABSTRACT
Jefferson Salamanders (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) face challenges from habitat loss and climate change. This study employs Species Distribution Models (SDMs) and Habitat Suitability Models (HSMs) using occurrence data from GBIF, iNaturalist, and citizen science programs to identify Appalachian and Blue Ridge regions as critical habitats. Historical comparisons reveal declining occurrences linked to habitat degradation, while vernal pool preferences and co-occurrence patterns with other amphibians were identified. Findings emphasize conserving vernal pools and surrounding forests to ensure survival, offering actionable insights for habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation. This research bridges knowledge gaps and supports efforts to preserve this indicator species.
