Dean's Blog: Seasons of Change at Mason Science

I love this time of year. It’s incredible to walk around campus and see George Mason’s natural green and gold on full display. It lifts my mood and re-energizes the conservationist in me. Living and learning in this part of the country definitely has its perks.
As scientists, we understand the biological reasons leaves change color. But beyond the facts, I’m always struck by the resilience of the trees—and the full ecosystem—during this season of transition. For months, leaves have provided shade, shelter, and protection. Now, as they turn shades of red, rust, brown, and gold—or stay green—they remind us of the beauty of diversity within a shared forest. And when those leaves eventually fall, they create a foundation for future growth. Nature shows us that change, though inevitable, serves a purpose.
Our college is experiencing its own season of change. Like the forest, we’re evolving—embracing transformation that sustains and strengthens our community. Change for its own sake isn’t ideal, but purposeful change—rooted in improvement and collective benefit—is vital. To be resilient through it is a skill; to navigate it together as a community is our superpower.
Whether it’s implementing our College Strategic Plan, advancing our Administrative Support Assessment, refining curricula through technology and student feedback, or adapting research priorities to new funding landscapes, Mason Science continues to evolve. Each effort reflects our shared commitment to innovation, connectedness, and resilience.
These transitions begin with trust—trust that our collective work will make us stronger, even if the process brings lean times or new challenges. We’ve weathered change before, grounded in mutual respect and collaboration, and we’ll continue to do so with creativity and purpose. And as always, we’ll take time to celebrate the renewal and growth that follow.
Earlier this year, I shared reflections on the changes ahead for Mason Science—a new dean, a comprehensive administrative review, and new ways of operating to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Like the turning leaves, these shifts reveal the beauty of difference and the promise of progress. Now, as the season changes once again, we’re beginning to see how those efforts take root. It’s time to embrace what’s next—with optimism, courage, and appreciation for the growth still to come.
