Pegion Named Chair of Prediction Working Group

AOES Assistant Professor Kathy Pegion has been named co-chair of the newly-created Earth System Prediction Working Group (ESPWG).

ESPWG is a working group of the Community Earth System Model (CESM), which is one of the premier climate models used by scientists at GMU and around the world.  The leadership position reflects Dr. Pegion's extensive work in Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Predictions. The other co-chairs of the group are Yaga Richter and Steve Yeager, both from National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

CESM Chief Scientist Gokhan Danabasoglu described the new working group in an email announcement, which said in part:

"Interest in Earth System Predictions on time scales from sub-seasonal to decadal has grown rapidly within both the national and international climate research communities during the last decade or so...

"The initial scope and activities of the ESPWG include:

  • ... facilitating and coordinating fundamental research focused on ... Earth system predictions on timescales from sub-seasonal to multidecadal.

  • ...provision of large ensemble initialized hindcast/forecast simulations that are too computationally burdensome for individual university researchers to undertake.

  • overseeing the development of community diagnostic toolkits and experimental frameworks for exploring predictable processes and sensitivities to prediction system design.

  • acting as a coordinator: collecting community input...; promoting collaborative multidisciplinary research...; and providing a reliable, catalyzing forum for sharing the latest science results. "
