Professor of environmental policy and management Younsung Kim of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy was invited to speak at the 14th UNFCCC-GIR-CASTT, a professional training program for national experts on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories from 27 developing countries. The training program took place from August 19 to September 6, 2024, in Pangyo, South Korea, aiming to boost the technical capacity of developing countries in preparing and reporting high-quality GHG inventories.

During her session, entitled "Why Do Companies Strategize Their Responses to Climate Change?" Professor Kim discussed how climate change poses physical, regulatory, and financial risks for businesses, and emphasized the need for companies to adopt strategic approaches to address these challenges. She also distinguished between firms that genuinely integrate climate strategies and those engaged in greenwashing.

The participants, after reflecting on their local industries' efforts to reduce carbon emissions across product life cycles, recognized the importance of leveraging the business sector to meet the climate targets outlined in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The training session by Professor Kim was well-received.  The participants acknowledged that they gained valuable insights into the credibility of corporate carbon strategies, which they deemed relevant to their work and personal consumption behaviors.
