Younsung Kim speaks about carbon markets at Korea Pavilion event at COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
This year, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or COP29, was held in Baku, Azerbaijan during November 11-22,2024.
Professor of environmental science and policy Younsung Kim was invited to the panel discussion of Korea Pavilion side event Leveraging Data for Transparency and Efficiency in Carbon Markets hosted by Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Research Center of Korea (GIR) on November 13, 2024.
During the event, carbon markets in Korea, Japan, and China were presented because they are part of carbon reduction plans for carbon neutrality and essential components for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in the Paris Climate Agreement. As a panelist, professor Kim discussed the U.S. carbon markets, including mandatory carbon pricing schemes such as RGGI (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative) and the carbon market in California. Amidst the uncertainty of the climate policy future in the U.S. due to a second term of the Trump administration, professor Kim underscored the significant role of the private sector in carbon markets, which could buffer the expected deregulatory initiatives by the second Trump administration.
