Admission Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (GPA <3.0 is evaluated on a case-by-case basis)
- The desire to pursue a career in health professions (medicine, dentistry, biomedical research, etc.)
- Satisfactory completion (C or better) of all prerequisite courses for medical, dental, veterinary or other healthcare-related schools prior to acceptance:
- Biology: One year of college level general biology courses (two semesters or equivalent)
- Chemistry: One year of college level general chemistry courses (two semesters or equivalent)
- Organic Chemistry: One year of college level organic chemistry courses (two semesters or equivalent)
- Mathematics: One semester of college level math courses (calculus OR statistics)
- Physics: One year of college level physics courses (two semesters or equivalent)
- Completed Mason graduate application (on-line application is preferable) along with a the appropriate application fee ($75 for domestic, $80 for international students)
- Copies of official transcripts from each institution attended. All applicants whose undergraduate institution(s) have the ability to send transcripts electronically should send them to ugtrans@gmu.edu. The transcripts will not be considered official unless sent by the school. Official transcripts can also be mailed to the address below:

Fairfax, VA 22030 - Three letters of recommendation or professional school advising committee letter.
- Solid experience (volunteer or paid) in the clinical or research field of your choice.
- Submit Curriculum Vitae and/or Resume.
- Submit a statement of desire to pursue a career in medicine, biomedical research, or a related field (500-1000 words).
- No standardized test scores are required.
International Students
In addition to the requirements above, international applicants must submit official transcripts and degree certificate and/or diploma in both the original language and English, and an international transcript evaluation (which Mason will perform for you at no cost if you prefer).
Proof of English proficiency is required in one of the following exams:
- TOEFL (computer – min. 230, paper – min. 570, internet – min. 88 with at least 20 in each section),
- IELTS (min 6.5) academic exam, or
- Pearson Test of English (min. 59) is required for all non-native English speakers regardless of current residence.
Students who may request an exemption from such a test include those who have completed a degree from a university or college in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
All applicants requiring F1 visas are eligible to apply. George Mason University does not guarantee that any applicant will receive an F1 visa. However, applicants must submit all required documents in a timely manner to enable the College of Science Graduate Admissions Processing Center the time necessary to process the forms to secure such a visa. Please remember, however, that there are a number of medical schools which do not consider non-US residents for admission to medical school.
How Do I Apply?
The online application is available at admissions.gmu.edu. Apply Now.
- Choose "Graduate Studies" within the Graduate Degree-Seeking section. It is a cohort system, so students are only admitted in the fall semester.
- You will fill out the application and select your application program
- In the application program’s tab
- Choose “Certificate” in the Degree drop-down menu
- Then, select “Advanced Biomedical Science” in the program selections
- Then you submit your application and pay your non-refundable application fee*.
- You’ll receive two email within minutes of submitting your application
- Application Submission Confirmation
- Instructions on how to submit program-specific requirements (Unofficial Transcript, Personal Statement, Resume)
- Then you can log back in to your application and finish uploading all of your program-specific supplementary materials. We strongly encourage you to upload all of your supplementary materials at this point. Using postal mail or emailing documents will slow down your application processing, which we know is important to you and we want to provide you the fastest response possible.
Submitting Your Application and Paying Your Fee
Applications cannot be processed or reviewed by our admissions staff until the application fee is paid. When you are ready to submit your application, you must pay your non-refundable application fee via credit card. Please remember to carefully check your application, specifically your program, before submission as no further changes can be made.
