G2 Curriculum
We offer a post-baccalaureate graduate level Advanced Biomedical Sciences Certificate program for individuals interested in careers in the health professions. Courses are taught by Georgetown and George Mason professors.
This is a full-time 9-month, 20 credit graduate level certificate program which provides excellent advanced science preparation for health professions including medical, dental and other healthcare-related advanced studies. The program includes preparation for professional examinations (such as MCAT, DAT, or GRE), and outstanding advising and support towards your goals. The graduate certificate program follows a traditional semester system. Courses are taken concurrently and the program begins in late August. There is a winter break that runs from mid-December through mid-January. The program generally is completed by mid-May.
Students who successfully complete the ABS certificate program are eligible to continue their coursework at Georgetown University and complete a traditional Masters in Physiology. For eligible students who choose to complete an MS at Georgetown University during the summer, their summer studies generally begin in the second week of June.
Courses are offered in either traditional lecture format or in small group, discussion-based hybrid format. Lectures can accommodate up to 100 students and the hybrid classes can accommodate up to 25 students.
Advanced Biomedical Sciences Certificate Curriculum
Fall Schedule (11 credits)
BMED 601 – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (4)
This course is the equivalent of a biochemistry course, and it covers biochemical processes and cellular signaling mechanisms.
BMED 602 – Biostatistics (3)
This course covers the basic principles of biostatistics in theoretical and practical context including: exploring and displaying data appropriately, exploring relationships between two variables, issues of gathering sample data, and understanding randomness and probability.
BMED 603 – Cell Biology & Microscopic Anatomy (3)
This course covers basic histological techniques, ultrastructure of the cell, basic tissue types and histology of specific organ systems. Structural-functional and clinical correlations are described. Lectures are supplemented with slide review sessions. Microscopic laboratory reviews are conducted to teach students how to view histological sections using microscopes.
BMED 652 – Biomedical Career Pathways (1)
This course is a staple of the joint George Mason/Georgetown programs. It consists of lectures, special presentations, and exercises relevant to the application and decision-making process in pursuing a health-related education and profession.
Spring Schedule (9-11 credits)
BMED 604 – Fundamentals of Human Physiology (5)
This course covers the basic elements of systems physiology including major organ systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, renal, digestive, and reproductive. This course includes lectures from Georgetown University faculty as well as small-group interactive problem-solving workshops.
BMED 605 – Introduction to Human Anatomy (3)
This course will complement the Fundamentals of Physiology course, following a parallel schedule to allow integration of material between the two courses. This course covers an in-depth anatomical study of all major body regions. The course will include lecture-based, small group-based, and cadaveric viewing-based learning. All cadaveric laboratory sessions and some lectures will be held at the Georgetown University campus.
BMED 651 – Physician and Society (1)
This course explores the cultural, social and economic and ethical factors that affect the practice of medicine in today’s world through a series of lectures by physicians, other experts, and student presentations.
Test Prep
Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or Dental Admissions Test (DAT) Preparation
Students will prepare for entrance exams under a contract with an established test preparation firm (Kaplan). These are offered as in-class courses, in January and May during the program, though not for degree credit. Although the physical course is only for one year, our students retain full online access to test-prep resources for an additional year. GRE prep may be available as an online option.
