Title: Fate, Remediation, and Policy of Heavy Metals (Hexavalent Chromium & Molybdenum) in Thailand’s Surface Waters
Dissertation Director: Dr. Esther Peters
Committee: Dr. Jennifer L. Salerno, Dr. Vivek Prasad, Dr. Sarah Pettito
ABSTRACT
This dissertation research evaluated two heavy metals in Thailand: first, analyzed hexavalent chromium concentration data in the Chao Phraya River system, including the tributary rivers of the Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan Rivers, and second, assessed a contamination case in the Lum Nam Jone Reservoir in Chachoengsao Province, with pH 2.8 caused by a company processing molybdenite into pure molybdenum using ferric chloride. Accountability and remediation under their laws and policies highlights types of challenge that may occur in chemical contaminant research. Establishing clear, strong laws that do not inhibit government oversight while ensuring compliance creates a difficult balance.
