Transfer of Credits
Students entering the doctoral program with an M.S. or other graduate work may substitute classes from other programs for Climate Dynamics required and elective classes. Particular care must be taken in substituting classes for required classes, to insure that the outside class corresponds closely to the required class. Classes that do not correspond to specific Climate Dynamics classes can be used to reduce the amount of required elective credit. These classes should be in subjects related to climate (such as meteorology, physical oceanography, hydrology, fluid dynamics, and radiative transfer) or useful for climate dynamics (such as some branches of mathematics and of computer science).
To use non-Mason classes for partial fulfillment of degree requirements, submit the “Reduction of Credit” form, available from the Mason Registrar forms web page. Each form must be signed by the Climate Dynamics Graduate Coordinator and the College of Science Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Special Programs. Before signing the form, the Coordinator should receive written approval (such as an email) from the student’s advisor. For substituting a required CLIM class, the Coordinator should also receive written approval from the instructor for the Mason class which is to be waived.
