13th Annual College of Science Undergraduate Research Colloquium
May 6, 2024, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Dewberry Hall South
Fairfax Campus
After a 4-year hiatus, the in-person 13th Annual COS Undergraduate Research Colloquium will be returning to an on-campus event on Monday May 6, 2024,from 2-4pm in Dewberry Hall. This event will be open to all Mason students, staff, and faculty.
Student researchers from COS can submit titles and abstracts up to April 10, 2024: https://gmu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d0sY49pEA8Yev6m
Who can present?
All undergraduate Mason students who are doing or have done STEM related research are invited to present at the Colloquium. Projects conducted in an independent study, course-imbedded research experience and/or other faculty mentored settings are welcome. You are welcome to present research that was performed at non-Mason sites such as NIH or summer REUs. If you are unsure if you are eligible to participate, please email Dr. Rebecca Jones (rjones22@gmu.edu). Student presenters will create a research poster and submit it via email by April 24, 2024. A template is available on the event website and after abstract submission.
When developing an abstract, students should work with their mentor(s) to effectively communicate your scholarly question, what you have done to answer it, what results you have obtained/anticipate, and what those results mean in the appropriate context. Abstracts should be written with an interdisciplinary scientific audience in mind. It is ok if the project is not finished, and conclusions are speculative at the time of abstract submission.
What will happen at the event?
During the event, posters will be displayed in a physical conference format. Student presenters will stand by their poster during a portion of the event and will interact with visiting faculty, students, and judges. Student presenters should plan to be present for the duration of the event; conflicts due to final exams will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
All posters will be judged at least 2 times. Presentations will be judged in four categories Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Earth Sciences, and STEM Education. Winners will be determined and announced via email after the event concludes. Awards will be given for the top presentations in each category.
This event is organized by the STEM Accelerator. Please email stemcos@gmu.edu with any questions.
