George Mason University relies on the vital contributions of term faculty, who support our mission through teaching, advising, leadership, and service.
Term faculty make up a substantial part of George Mason’s full-time instructional staff, and their contributions are vital to our academic excellence and national reputation. It is essential to foster an environment that values and supports term faculty as they pursue their professional and career goals.
Over the last few years, the Provost Office has collaborated with the Colleges to make the guidelines for Term Faculty multi-year appointments and promotion accessible online in a detailed format.
- By November 1, 2025: A dossier for each of your candidates should be fully reviewed by all committees and the Dean electronically via the Interfolio system.
- By December 2025: The Provost will act on the recommendation for promotion and new multi-year appointment. The Term Faculty member will be notified in writing of the decision.
For questions on these processes or for technical support, please contact the College of Science Office of Faculty Affairs at cosofa@gmu.edu.
Interfolio’s Renewal, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) System
In support of the promotion and tenure process, Mason has invested in Interfolio’s Renewal, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) content management system. The Renewal, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) tool automates existing workflows and processes for faculty renewal, promotion and tenure into a unified content management system. This will streamline the RPT experience for candidates and reviewers at all levels within one secure and configurable system.
Term Reappointment & Multi-Year Contracts
In accordance with section 2.7.1 of the Faculty Handbook, Term Faculty will be evaluated for a new appointment. Term faculty members are eligible for reappointment based on quality of performance and departmental resource needs and commitments, including enrollment trajectory considerations.
Term Promotions
In accordance with section 2.7.3.1 of the Faculty Handbook, Term Faculty may be considered for a promotion with a new multi-year appointment, normally after five years of service. Promotion may occur within the period of a multi-year contract.
After submitting an official Term Promotion case via the Interfolio system and completing a review at the college level, the Provost will act on the recommendation. The Term Faculty member will be notified in writing of the decision. Term faculty who are promoted will be announced to the Board of Visitors.
