More About Atmospheric Sciences
The mission of the BS in Atmospheric Sciences is to prepare graduates for a successful career in the atmospheric and climate science field.
The Atmospheric Sciences BS teaches students the basics of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, and related topics relevant to meteorology and climate. The degree has been designed such that if all the recommended classes are taken students can meet both the Federal GS-1340 standard and American Meteorological Society (AMS) standard for undergraduate meteorological programs, which are key requirements for professionals in the field. It requires a strong core science base (i.e., math, physics, computer science, statistics, and chemistry).
The degree includes two concentrations:
Meteorology: designed to meet the demand for professionals able to digest, interpret, assess and translate weather forecasts, for careers in broadcast and consulting meteorology, weather analysis, and outreach and extension activities.
Computational Atmospheric Sciences – an innovative program designed to meet the demand for junior level scientists to help build, maintain, improve and operate highly complex numerical models for weather, climate, and pollutant dispersion. This concentration also prepares students for advanced degrees such as atmospheric science and climate.
