Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Fall 2022/Spring 2023 Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science will be accepting applications for GTAs for academic year 2022-2023 beginning in March 2022 until August 12th 2022.
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) Applications
To apply as a GTA with GGS, please email your intent to email@example.com. Only applicants sent to this email will be reviewed. Please include your G#, resume, and a cover letter.
Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) will be selected based on qualifications in the subject matter and teaching experience. GTA appointments will be made after review by the Chair. GTAs generally assist 1-2 instructors per semester and are considered full-time employed at 20 hours per week.
If you have never held a GTA position with us, please submit your intent early to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Renewing your current assistantship
ALL TAs need to reapply! Renewal is NOT automatic. This is the only way we will know that you wish to be renewed. Please notify us of your intent to continue in the following academic year by emailing us at email@example.com. Your renewal will be contingent upon available funding and a positive performance evaluation with the Chair.
- Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a fixed stipend (For AY 2022-2023: $22,000 for Ph.D. students and $16,000 for MS students) and they typically assist 1-2 instructors per semester, but assignments may vary.
- GTAs qualify for tuition support of up to 6 credit hours at the in-state rate per semester. (Ph.D. students with a full-time GTA position are assessed tuition at the in-state rate regardless of domicile. MS students with an out-of-state domicile will be responsible for paying for the difference in the tuition rates.)
- Ph.D. students are eligible for Subsidized Graduate Student Health Insurance. Insurance is only available to students beginning appointments in the Fall, unless they are a new admit in the Spring semester.
Terms and Conditions
Renewals are not automatic. Graduate students must be making adequate progress toward their degree to renew their appointment.
Please note the GTA appointment does not cover student fees. All fees are the responsibility of the student. (http://studentaccounts.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/FY17COSCourseFees.pdf)
