Fall 2023/Spring 2024 Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Applications for GTAs for academic year 2023-2024 are currently closed. We will begin taking applicants for for academic year 2024-2025 starting March, 2024.
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) Applications
To apply as a GTA with GGS, please email your intent to ggs@gmu.edu. Only applicants sent to this email will be reviewed. Please include your G#, resume, and a cover letter.
Application Process
Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) will be selected based on qualifications in the subject matter and teaching experience. GTA appointments will be made after review by the Chair. GTAs generally assist 1-2 instructors per semester and are considered full-time employed at 20 hours per week.

Renewing your current assistantship
ALL TAs need to reapply! Renewal is NOT automatic. This is the only way we will know that you wish to be renewed. Please notify us of your intent to continue in the following academic year by emailing us at ggs@gmu.edu. Your renewal will be contingent upon available funding and a positive performance evaluation with the Chair.
Compensation
- Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a fixed stipend (For AY 2022-2023: $22,000 for Ph.D. students and $16,000 for MS students) and they typically assist 1-2 instructors per semester, but assignments may vary.
- GTAs qualify for tuition support of up to 6 credit hours at the in-state rate per semester. (Ph.D. students with a full-time GTA position are assessed tuition at the in-state rate regardless of domicile. MS students with an out-of-state domicile will be responsible for paying for the difference in the tuition rates.)
- Ph.D. students are eligible for Subsidized Graduate Student Health Insurance. Insurance is only available to students beginning appointments in the Fall, unless they are a new admit in the Spring semester.
Terms and Conditions
Renewals are not automatic. Graduate students must be making adequate progress toward their degree to renew their appointment.
