Environmental Professional Career Network (EPCN)
A joint initiative with the U.S. EPA aimed at enhancing student networking, engagement and preparation toward a career in environmental work in the federal government, the private, and/or non-profit sectors.
The Environmental Professional Career Network (EPCN) is a new initiative which launched in late summer/fall 2018 to help undergrads and graduate students learn about environmental careers from practicing career professionals. Developed by a partnership between U.S. EPA, the Department of Environmental Science & Policy, and the University’s Career Center, the network provides an opportunity for students to meet environmental professionals from outside of academia for informational interviews, and more. Self-directed students may use this program to learn about career opportunities, improve their interviewing and networking skills, and receive feedback on their resumes. Colonel (Ret) Reginald E. Allen, a member of the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service (SES) and the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for the US Environmental Protection Agency HQ in Washington, DC spearheaded the initiative while he was on a one year detail as an Executive-in-Residence, Affiliate Professor at George Mason University.
Most professionals participating in EPCN currently work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with representatives from the private sector, and non-profit organizations. ESP students are encouraged to select who they would like to meet based on the profiles posted on this webpage to work with in the program. Interactions may include some or all of the following:
- Skype and/or In-person meetings with the selected professional.
- Informal coaching and preparation for informational interviews.
- A visit to the EPA headquarters in Washington, D.C. / potential to shadow a professional for a few hours
- Potential networking opportunities at the nation’s leading environmental agencies and organizations
A Mason News article was published on April 5, 2019 about this mentoring opportunity: https://www2.gmu.edu/news/576036
