GMU Summer Team Impact Project (2021) for Graduate Students
We are looking forward to hiring two graduate students to work with us for 11 weeks as part of the GMU Summer Team Impact Project (2021). In this period, we will investigate the inclusion of the spatial and temporal variation of human behavior in the spread of COVID-19 from a wide range of data sources pertaining to human mobility and other respiratory disease-related behaviors.
Students with a background in one of the following topics are preferred:
- Data processing and management.
- Data mining and machine learning
- Agent-based modeling
Duration and Compensation:
You are expected to treat this opportunity as a full-time job for the period of May 31 to August 13, 2021 and will be paid a $6,000 stipend across five pay periods in the summer (payment occurs every two weeks).

Federal Tax Economist Position
Center for Federal Tax Policy
Tax Foundation’s Federal Team is looking for an economist to research and write about tax policy and its impacts on the federal budget and the economy. The primary focus will be the development and use of our Taxes and Growth model (TAG), a general equilibrium model used to simulate the effects of tax policies on the economy and on government revenues and budgets.
Responsibilities
- Work with a team of economists and policy analysts to simulate the effects of tax policy changes using TAG, including conventional revenue estimation and macroeconomic modeling
- Research and develop new methods to build out TAG capabilities
- Research and write about tax policy and the economy, both in short form and longer form studies
- Communicate research findings to a variety of audiences, including academics, journalists, and policymakers
Qualifications and Skills
- PhD or equivalent training in economics with a focus on public finance, international economics, macroeconomics, or related area
- Strong analytical and modeling skills, e.g., general equilibrium modeling
- Good communication and writing skills
- Ability to work well within a team and on tight deadlines
Nice-to-haves
- Experience researching and writing about public policy
- Experience working with and analyzing large datasets, e.g., from BEA and IRS
- Experience building large-scale models
- Experience with tax revenue estimation
- Programming skills, e.g., Python

These fellowships provide financial support to graduate students during the summer term, allowing them to devote significant time to their dissertation or thesis research. The award fosters greater professional productivity and assists in timely degree completion. The application portal can be found here.
Caltech is now accepting applications for our WAVE Fellows undergraduate research program.
The WAVE Fellows program provides support for undergraduate students, who are underrepresented in STEM and intent on pursuing a Ph.D., to conduct a 10-week summer research project under the mentorship of Caltech faculty.
