Selective Withdrawal
Undergraduate degree seeking students at George Mason University have the ability to withdraw from a course after the published drop deadline for that particular semester within a confined timeframe. Students may use a maximum of three selective withdrawals during their academic tenure at the university. The three classes can be of any number of credits. Students will have from the Monday after the open drop period through the ninth week of the semester to utilize a selective withdrawal. For sessions shorter than 14 weeks, the period will be set in proportion to the length of the class. These dates are published on the Office of the University Registrar’s calendar page.
Selective Withdrawals need only the student’s signature and are processed through the Registrar’s Office. The web link to access the selective withdrawal process is below.
Important Information Regarding Selective Withdrawals
- The selective withdrawal must be submitted within the official selective withdrawal period for courses taken during that semester or term. Retroactive permission for a selective withdrawal after the official selective withdrawal period or for a previous semester is not permitted and cannot be permitted under any circumstance.
- Selective withdrawals are final and once processed by the Office of the University Registrar may not be removed at a later time.
- Withdrawals of any kind may seem negative to graduate and/or professional schools and should be exercised judiciously.
- Though selective withdrawals do not factor into the student’s grade point average, they do add in to the student’s attempted hours.
