List of top 2% of world’s cited scientists include dozens of Mason Science faculty
In academic circles, faculty publish significant findings in journals within their disciplines to share scientific discoveries and methodologies. After a paper is published, it can be cited to contribute within the work of other scientists—an indicator of the importance of one’s work and findings.
Stanford University recently released its list of the top 2% most cited scientists from a variety of disciplines. Congratulations to the more than twenty Mason Science faculty on the list who exemplify the great impact they have in their classrooms, laboratories, and beyond. (see list below).
“Our Mason scientists perform innovative research of consequence to solve the world’s toughest problems,” said Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm, College of Science dean. “It’s not just about quantity, it’s about quality--we focus on publishing innovative, peer-reviewed results in high impact journals to further one’s field of science and broaden the possibility of scientific discovery,” Miralles-Wilhelm shared.
In total, more than eighty Mason-affiliated faculty made the list, including President Gregory Washington. According to an article by Plos Biology, the list assesses "scientists for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 and for citation impact during the single calendar year 2019.” And these scientometrics can become a part of one’s legacy as work from scientists on this list may have been cited for many years, even after faculty retire.
You can find the updated databases and code in Mendeley. This free research data repository will also make future updates to this list generally accessible.
